The present problems are made worst for the poorest by the extortionate levels of interest charges frequently levied.\r\n\r\nAt one time in this country usury - the lending of money for interest - if not illegal was certainly considered immoral. In certain societies it still is. Whilst a modern economy depends upon the availability of money for individuals and businesses to borrow there should surely be a limit on the level of return that lenders can reasonably expect.\r\n\r\nIt is suggested that a maximum level of interest should be enacted to limit excessive returns and reduce the activities of loan sharks.","committee_note":null,"state":"rejected","signature_count":1,"created_at":"2011-08-17T12:52:46.000Z","updated_at":"2020-02-16T19:27:02.554Z","rejected_at":"2017-06-21T12:34:46.905Z","opened_at":null,"closed_at":null,"moderation_threshold_reached_at":"2011-08-17T12:52:46.000Z","response_threshold_reached_at":null,"government_response_at":null,"debate_threshold_reached_at":null,"debate_scheduled_at":null,"scheduled_debate_date":null,"debate_outcome_at":null,"rejection":{"code":"duplicate","details":null},"government_response":null,"debate":null,"departments":[],"topics":[]}}}
