Lisbon Treaty gave effect to the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights. Article 2 of the Charter provides that “everyone has the right to life”. The abolition of the death penalty is a key objective for the European Union’s human rights policy. Why should there be a constitution for Europe, if EU is merely a trading bloc? Integration into a United States of Europe will be impossible. Before Parliament considers legislating to reintroduce the death penalty & more effectively deporting failed asylum seekers, UK should have a referendum on replacing EU Charter of Fundamental Rights and the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees by a British Bill of Rights.","committee_note":null,"state":"rejected","signature_count":1,"created_at":"2011-09-07T06:46:28.000Z","updated_at":"2020-02-16T19:27:13.372Z","rejected_at":"2017-06-21T12:35:22.978Z","opened_at":null,"closed_at":null,"moderation_threshold_reached_at":"2011-09-07T06:46:28.000Z","response_threshold_reached_at":null,"government_response_at":null,"debate_threshold_reached_at":null,"debate_scheduled_at":null,"scheduled_debate_date":null,"debate_outcome_at":null,"rejection":{"code":"duplicate","details":null},"government_response":null,"debate":null,"departments":[],"topics":[]}}}
