If a village shop has less than 250 square feet of actual retail space, excluding stock rooms, they should be exempt from business rates and tax and only pay the equivalent of a band d council tax levy, thereby helping them compete with the bulk buying supermarkets, and encouraging the shops to stay open and serve the local community.
