Petition Stop the selling or passing on of personal information in the electoral registers

More details

This is a petition to ban government agencies from passing on or selling details in the electoral register.

When someone puts their name on the electoral register, this is to give them the opportunity to vote and for selected companies to prevent fraudulent activities.

Currently local authorities can sell or pass on information to third parties. People can opt out of this by asking to be excluded from the "edited register".

However, there are issues ensuring the accuracy of the data. Hence it is difficult to ensure that only those who opt to appear on the edited register actually do.

In addition, there is increasing evidence that the details are being obtained by criminals who are using this information to commit identity theft and identify potential victims of hate crime.

The only realistic way this can be stopped is with the scrapping of the edited electoral register and government being forced to keep our personal information completely private and confidential.
