Rejected petition Reform the house of lords - randomly selected members from the voting population
More details
A true democracy should reflect the voice of the people and contain people chosen from and representative of every part of the population they represent.
The petition proposes to abolish hereditary peers within the house of lords and have only a minority proportion of the 2nd house comprised of nominated lords, peers and senior business people.(eg. 20%).
If we are to continue to have unelected members deciding the countries future, then the remainder of the 2nd house should comprise of unelected members randomly selected from the voting population in the same way as jury service.
Membership should be for a fixed term and subject to well thought out exclusions.
such a system would allow for truly democratic 2nd house able to represent the people and communities of the UK.
- a randomly selected 2nd house would enhance the feeling of civilian involvement in the running of our own country and set an example for real democracy to the rest of the world !
