This petition was submitted during the 2010-2015 parliament
Petition A petition to make it compulsory for rear-seat passengers to wear seatbelts.
More details
This is a petition to quite simply make it compulsory for any passenger sat in the rear of a vehicle to wear their seatbelt.
Currently it is optional to wear a seatbelt as a rear-seat passenger, yet the Government will only go so far as to encourage wearing seatbelts when it knows the dangers of not wearing them.
A person (driver/passenger) in the front of a vehicle is still at risk of being killed even if wearing a seatbelt if the passenger sat behind them is not and there is a high-speed head-on collision.
This petition is to protect all vehicle occupants.
