Rejected petition Deliberate misrepresentation used on ballot paper

More details

On the ballot papers for the Election of Members of the European Parliament for the Yorkshire and Humber Region held in MAY 2014, the following candidate was listed at the head of the paper.

An Independence from Europe
UK Independence Now

Further down the alphabetical list appeared the following.

UK Independence Party (UKIP).

This deliberate ruse was used as a deceit causing persons intending to vote for UKIP to instead make their mark against the candidates listed first on the list. Complaints have been heard about this from voters.

This is an act of deliberate deception,

This is a grey area for the police and notification of the concern to the police has resulted in the matter being forwarded to the Electoral Commission in London.

There basic assessment was “We made the decision that the party name was not likely to cause voters to confuse it with another registered party.”

The Government should stop this dishonesty.
