Rejected petition British government: condemn authorities' use of violence against peaceful demonstrators in Hong Kong
More details
The China Central Government has disappointed HongKongers by leaving no room for genuine universal suffrage. Thousands of peaceful protesters have gone to the streets to demand democracy in Hong Kong. Anti-riot squads have been sent and police are escalating violence against protesters.
Freedom of speech, expression and demonstration are protected by international and domestic law (Basic Laws, Article 27). Use of force is only legitimate under conditions defined by international human rights law. It is a violation of international law to arrest and detain people solely for exercising their rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.
We ask the British Government, as the signatory of the Sino-British Joint Declaration, to
1. Condemn Hong Kong authorities’ failure uphold their obligations to respect the right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly
2. Demand Hong Kong authorities uphold these obligations under domestic and international law
