Rejected petition Cold War Recognition

More details

We call upon Her Majesty’s Government and the Ministry of Defence to recognise the largely forgotten contribution to the preservation of democracy and world peace made by the members of HM Armed Forces who served their country during the period 1947 to 1991; the period in history known as the ‘Cold war’.

The government should issue a Cold War (1947-1991) medal to all personnel who served as part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) in Western Europe for a qualifying period of not less than one year.

This medal would recognise the selfless contribution made during that period by many servicemen and women, without whom democracy would likely have been overcome by the forces of the Warsaw Pact.

All personnel who served as part of the British contribution to NATO during the period 1947-1991 should be eligible regardless of rank or role. The medal should be issued free to all serving and retired veterans on application.
